Statement from Bishop Hanna - 12th November 2015

For Immediate Release

12 November 2015

It was reported yesterday that a Catholic Priest in Narrandera had been arrested and charged in relation to a serious criminal offence.

We can now confirm that the alleged offender has been identified as Father Neru Leuea, parish priest of St Mel's Parish in Naranderra.  The charge is aggravated sexual assault - victim under the age of 16 years

I can't speak to the particulars of this case as it is an ongoing investigation, however, we recognise that any allegation of child sexual abuse is extremely distressing for everyone involved.

We pledge our absolute support to any victim of child sexual abuse and assure everyone that we have in place, strict protocols for the reporting of this type of allegation.

During this difficult time, we have offered support to the staff, clergy and members of the affected parishes and will continue to offer assistance and counselling wherever it is needed.

The NSW police and judicial system have an important job ahead of them and we have offered our unconditional cooperation to ensure that this matter can proceed without impediment or prejudice.

If anyone has any information relevant to this case or wishes to report a crime, we urge them to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000, or the Child Protection Helpline on 132 111.
