Statement from Bishop Gerard Hanna on the arrest of priest
For Immediate release
11 November 2015
At approximately 8:30am today, a priest in the The Catholic Diocese of
Wagga Wagga was arrested and charged by police with a serious criminal
offence.
At this stage, there is no further information in relation to these charges, however, the priest has been stood down pending the outcome of this investigation.
I acknowledge that this news will cause a great deal of shock and distress within the Diocese. I wish to reassure members of the Parishes affected that we remain mindful of this and will continue to provide support to them in whatever capacity that support is needed.
The Catholic Diocese of Wagga Wagga has an absolute and abiding commitment to promote the safety, welfare and well being of those in their care and will cooperate fully with NSW police throughout their investigation. I ask that, out of respect for all parties, the media and public allow the NSW police to undertake their important work without impediment.
